About Me

Your counselling depends upon the working relationship with your counsellor, and so I have written a little about me.

A sense of what kind of person we are can be gained from looking at what others say about us. In my case I hear it said that I am quiet, calm, and I often hear people say that they feel safe around me.

Myself, I would add that I feel passionate about personal development, and have helped many people make positive changes in their lives in therapy.

Whatever your difficulty, as a qualified counsellor I provide an environment of warmth, empathy and acceptance, where you will feel free to express yourself in confidence and privacy. I will help you to explore your thoughts and feelings, personal values and meanings, to reveal what really matters to you.

I know it takes courage to go for therapy because of feelings of stigma, so I applaud anyone who seeks professional help. Michael Underwood. Dip.Couns. MBACP.

The best qualification for working as a counsellor is one's own personality, however here are my formal qualifications:

  • Certificate in Counselling Studies
    2014, CPCAB
  • Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling
    2016, CPCAB
  • Diploma in Online Counselling (Credit)
    2017, OCST

My work as a counsellor in an NHS setting and also in a local family support centre has given me valuable experience of working with a broad range of issues but especially anxiety, depression and loneliness. Having worked in learning disabilities, I am used to overcoming prejudice and I naturally see the person rather than the problems. The time working on a local mental health helpline gives me experience of working with people by telephone, i.e. remotely.

I undertake Continual Professional Development courses. Here are a few of them I have done.

  • Introduction to Working with Dreams and Imagery
  • CEOP ThinkYouKnow
  • Working with Trauma Short Term
  • Relational Depth & Emotional Connection Online Therapy (BACP)
  • Solution Focussed Approaches
  • Online Therapy
  • Identity (BACP)
  • Introduction to Gestalt Therapy
